Leh the erstwhile capital of the kingdom of Ladakh is now a dream destination of many and the Mecca of adventure enthusiasts! Leh, one of the coldest deserts in the world is located at a distance of 434 Kms from Srinagar and 474 Kms from Manali (Himachal Pradesh). Leh is a backpacker’s haven with numerous trekking trails, valleys, and picturesque lakes. Renowned as the land of monks and monasteries there is lots to see in this amazing piece of land.
Ladakh or the ‘Land of High Passes’ is a barren yet beautiful region located in the north Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Sharing its east border with Tibet, Ladakh has Lahaul and Spiti to its south and the Kashmir valley to the west. Strategically placed on ancient trade routes, Ladakh lies between the Kunlun Mountains in the north and the Himalayas in the south. The region originally comprised the Baltistan valley, the Indus Valley, Zanskar, Lahaul, Spiti, Aksai Chin and Ngari.
Duration : 7 nights
Inclusions: All accommodation, transportation, meals as specified in itinerary, airport transfers
(We would have liked to include all meals too but from experience we know some places where you’d prefer to try out the lovely cafes and restaurants. So there’s no point making you pay twice for the same meal!)
Day 1 : Arrive early morning into Leh by your flight. Don’t forget to put on your jacket in the warm comfort of the plane. Don’t want you catching a chill with the instant drop in temperature as you step out! Later in the day will be much warmer, not to worry. You will be received at the airport by a representative and transferred to your comfortable hotel. One of the most important components of your trip that you must adhere to is the acclimatization required due to the much higher altitude. Do not plan on heading out at all today. Sleep. Don’t worry about that slight headache almost everyone experiences on day 1. Eat and rehydrate properly. Maximum exertion should maybe be a small stroll outside to the neighbouring shops. Meals included are lunch and dinner.
Day 2 : Everyone should by now be halfway to having acclimatized to the altitude, but we do not want you to exert too much with any walking. So get into the transport and enjoy the lovely drive to Alchi. The scenery along the way is amazing and you can also experience the awesome gravity defying qualities of the magnetic hill. After enjoying the quaint village and monastery at Alchi, we head back to Leh to relax for the evening and get another good night’s sleep. Meals included are breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 3 : Wake up fresh and slightly early today to enjoy a warm breakfast. Today we cross one of the highest motorable passes in the world, called Khardung La, at an altitude 17,582ft above mean sea level. Once across we head down into one of the most picturesque areas anywhere on the planet – Nubra Valley. Snowcapped peaks, desert sand dunes with Bactrian camels, rivers, green grass and trees all greet you in the same glance! After exploring this absolutely scenic area, we stay overnight at our deluxe resort for the night. Meals included are Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 4 : After an early breakfast, we head out to explore another part of the Nubra valley in the direction of the famous Siachen Glacier. We visit the hot springs and the fascinating Samstaling Gonpa. After this we head back towards Leh, stopping en route for a warm lunch surrounded by towering mountains and breathtaking views. We reach back to Leh by late afternoon. Relax for a bit and then head out to explore the lovely market and many cafes/restaurants. This day we can either go out for dinner as a group or everyone can try out the restaurant that looks inviting to them. One of the favourites and quite close to the hotel is a restaurant called Summer Harvest. Meals included are Breakfast and Lunch.
Day 5 : Wake up fresh for some hot lemon tea and breakfast. We today head for the world famous lake called Pangong Tso. It is said that on a clear day, you can clearly see upto 9 different shades of blue and green in the lake. We explore around the lake and also as importantly just sit and enjoy the tranquil beauty it offers so abundantly. Our deluxe camp is located very close to this lake and you have all the time to walk around and enjoy the peace. This is one place you don’t want to walk around without your camera! Meals included are Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Day 6 : After a leisurely morning tea and breakfast, everyone enjoys walking around the lake a little more. Almost each person who visits Pangong always feels that one day is not enough for visiting it. The truth is even a week still feels too short. Once the group has had their fill of the lake’s beauty, we head back to Leh to reach by early afternoon. The rest of the day is free to explore, eat, shop. Do as you please… Meals included are only breakfast as you’ll have your lunch and dinner in the midst of enjoying Leh and your shopping there.
Day 7 : On this last day of the trip, after breakfast we head out to explore and photograph some of the wonderful monasteries close to Leh. These include Shey, Thicksey and Hemis. For lunch you can try out some of the wonderful cafes at Hemis. Once back in Leh, for those still having the enthusiasm and energy, I’d suggest going up to the Shanti Stupa that towers over Leh and offers an unparalleled view of the sunset over the Himalayan mountain peaks. For dinner we head out to try some more of the restaurants around offering scrumptious meals.
Day 8 : After an early breakfast, we are transferred to the airport to catch our flight back home, taking with us memories to last a lifetime and a resolve to be back again soon some day!
